The Award Program
How does the TNCPE/Baldrige process help companies make a difference? Robert Otwell, CEO of TNCPE Excellence Award winner Maury Regional Medical Center, describes it in one word: Focus.
Applying for a Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence Award is an effective way to energize employees, increase the focus on business results and look at your organization from a systems perspective.
At the end of the process, you will receive award recognition, but the real value of the program comes from the comprehensive feedback report that details your organization's strengths and opportunities for improvement. Successful organizations use this low-cost consultation as a key strategic planning input.
The TNCPE Award program is open to companies and non-profit organizations throughout Tennessee (some out-of-state organizations are also eligible). Whether you're large or small, established or start-up, the program scales to fit your organization's unique profile.
The Award Process
The foundation of the TNCPE Award program is the Baldrige-based Criteria for Performance Excellence, published annually by TNCPE. Using questions posed in the Criteria, you'll create a self-assessment that is analyzed by a team of TNCPE Examiners. This self-assessment can range from five to 55 pages, depending on the award level sought. The four award levels are:
- Level 1 Interest Recognition (beginner level)
- Level 2 Commitment Award (intermediate level)
- Level 3 Achievement Award (advanced level)
- Level 4 Excellence Award (highest level)
After analyzing your self-assessment, Examiners will make a site visit to your workplace to gain a thorough understanding of your organization. Based on its findings, the Examiner team will prepare a detailed feedback report that identifies your strengths and opportunities for improvement. Finally, a Panel of Judges reviews the examiners' work and determines the applicant’s recognition level.
All applicant organizations are recognized at the Excellence in Tennessee Awards Banquet, held in conjunction with the Excellence in Tennessee Conference in February. During the banquet, each TNCPE applicant receives an award based on its level of achievement. For employees of organizations that participate in the application process, the banquet is a great celebration, confirming the organization’s commitment to improving performance and results.
A great way to get started is by ordering a copy of the Criteria for Performance Excellence. This book is the foundation of the TNCPE program. It provides details regarding application and eligibility requirements, as well as the Criteria on which to base your self-assessment. You can order your copy of the Critera in late February, 2013 from the TNCPE website or call the TNCPE office: (800) 453-6474.
